Wild Animals I Have Known

Wild Animals I Have Known is Ernest Thompson Seton's influential collection of animal stories drawn from close observation of North American wildlife.

First published in 1898, the volume presents a series of narrative sketches portraying individual animals-wolves, foxes, crows, and other creatures-with psychological depth and dramatic intensity. Each story blends field observation with literary shaping, offering accounts that are both naturalistic and emotionally resonant. Seton's portrayal of Lobo, the great wolf of Currumpaw, remains one of the most enduring animal narratives in American literature.

A pioneering work in wildlife storytelling, the book helped shape early conservationist sentiment and influenced later writers of animal fiction. Though sometimes described as children's literature, it occupies a broader place within American nature writing and the development of humane attitudes toward wildlife. Wild Animals I Have Known remains a significant work in the history of environmental literature and animal narrative.

Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) was a British-born American naturalist, author, and illustrator. A founding figure in the Boy Scouts of America and an early advocate of wildlife conservation, Seton combined scientific observation with literary storytelling. His animal narratives, including Wild Animals I Have Known, helped foster public appreciation for wildlife and influenced both environmental thought and the development of modern animal fiction.
