Het was een lange, kronkelige weg voor William Kentridge tot de filmmaker, operaregisseur, kunstenaar van wereldfaam die hij nu is. ‘Did I have anything to say that had not been said before and better?’, vraagt hij zich af. Maar die kronkels leveren boeiende inzichten op, en vooral precisie bij het zien, luisteren en kijken naar de maatschappij en haar conflicten. In dit boek beschrijft hij onder meer de oprichting van de Centre of the Less Good Idea, een soort atelier als dat van Rembrandt. Het begint daar bij het ontwerpen van een klein model op schaal en eindigt in een fantastische toneeluitvoering waarvoor je ogen en oren te kort komt. Kentridge viert het plezier van het absurde en van zelfbedrog, zich verzettend tegen het puur rationele. Hij laat ambigu�teit en twijfel de kop opsteken en ‘het minder goede idee’ tot bloei komen.
