Windows: What Would You Risk for a Moment of Genius? (Neural Shadows)

What would you risk for a moment of genius?

In a near-future world where intelligence can surge in unpredictable windows, sixteen-year-old Elara Voss is struggling to keep up. One moment, she’s a stressed-out student grieving her missing parents. The next, she’s the smartest person in the room—if only for a fleeting burst—thanks to mysterious neurological "windows" triggered by panic, danger, or stress.

As Elara is recruited into a secretive cohort of young talents, she must learn to master her abilities before they destroy her. Every surge brings extraordinary insight, but each window comes at a cost: crushing headaches, emotional fallout, and hours of enforced “cooldown” that can strike at the worst moments.

But Elara isn’t alone. Her new allies—a tinkering genius with a troubled past, a privileged rival with always-on tech, and a mentor who pushes ethical boundaries—each bring their own gifts and secrets. Together, they uncover a shadowy conflict between corporate innovators, strict regulators, and an underground movement fighting for cognitive justice.

As the stakes rise and alliances blur, Elara must decide what she’s willing to risk for answers—about her parents, her power, and her own self-worth beyond what any window can give.

Windows is the electrifying first novel in the Neural Shadows series—a cerebral YA sci-fi thriller packed with heists, high-stakes puzzles, and the question at its heart: Is genius worth the price?
