Wingless Eagle: U.S. Army Aviation through World War I

Johnson examines the early years of U.S. aviation to discover why, at the time of our entry into WWI, our air forces were so far behind those the Allies and the Germans were creating. He shows that a study of the origins of U.S. Army air power must look beyond considerations of technological development and military thinking to include an analysis of public opinion and the forces that shaped governmental action.

Herbert A. Johnson is Hollings Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of South Carolina. Author of eleven previous books, most recently The Chief Justiceship of John Marshall, 1801-1835, he retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1987.
