"The nature of these edifying dialogues is made clear from the beginning by the descriptions of the participants" characters. Sebastian is "a Learned and Pious Gentleman" with "a Sense of Religion", Philander is "a Genteel and Ingenious Person, but too much addicted to the Lightnesses of the Age, till reclaimed by" Sebastian, while Biophilus is "a Sceptical Person, who … was averse to the great Doctrines of Christianity … Till at length, awakened by the discreet Reasonings of Sebastian, and the affectionate Discourse of Philander" (p.[iv])."
