Collated, lacking rear panorama map.James Henry Bennett, an English medical doctor, helped to popularise the French Riviera as a winter holiday destination with this book. After contracting and healing from tuberculosis, Bennett's routine would be to spend winter in Menton and take a holiday in April and May to study the Mediterranean climate and vegetation, travelling to Genoa before returning in England in the summer.With the publication of Bennett's books, Menton's popularity as a destination greatly increased. His books were translated into German and also published in the United States. From "two or three hotels" in Menton in 1861, over 30 hotels had been built by 1875. Rebacked, with the original cloth for the boards and spine laid down.Externally, with slight rubbing to the extremities and a few small tide marks to the front board. A couple minor marks to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. First folding map frontispiece has one third split and loosely inserted, with tape reinforced to the other fold.
