NB: Wolfert's Roost and Other Papers, Now First Collected is a famous 1855 collection of short stories, sketches, travel accounts, and essays written by the celebrated American author Washington Irving. Originally published by G. P. Putnam & Co. in New York, this volume compiles various pieces Irving had previously written for The Knickerbocker magazine and other periodicals. The book is historically notable for popularizing the phrase "the almighty dollar," which appears in print here for the very first time. The collection captures Irving's signature blend of history, folklore, and travel journalism across several key subjects: The Hudson Valley & Dutch Settlements: Many sketches-including the title piece Wolfert's Roost-are set north of Manhattan in Westchester County, invoking the same legendary Dutch-American folklore style found in Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. European Musings: Several essays recount Irving's time living in and exploring Europe, including Sketches in Paris in 1825 and The Grand Prior of Minorca. American History & Legends: The volume features unique historical accounts and local legends, such as The Seminoles and Guests from Gibbet Island. Notable individual stories included in the volume are Mountjoy, The Creole Village, The Bermudas, The Widow's Ordeal, and The Count Van Horn.
