Grade 4-6-Well-organized, straightforward series titles. These presentations begin with the anatomy and habits of these creatures and cover their life cycles, activities, and places in the ecosystem. The well-designed pages consist of text broken up with blocks of related facts and colorful, close-up photographs and labeled drawings. Unusual subspecies with peculiar features or comparisons of subspecies are described. The books offer a balance of research material and interest-piquing detail. While Wolves is likely to be the more appealing topic to readers, the crab family is given intriguing coverage. Both volumes provide adequate material for report writers, and may inspire further interest in their subjects.

Whales.
Gr. 4-7. From the smallest ants to the largest whales, books in the Secret World Of series thoroughly investigate animal life in a visually interesting and readable way. Each volume focuses on a particular species or group of species, exploring its habitat, its members, its behavior, its mating habits, its enemies, and the threats to its future. Bulleted facts lead off, with a featured little-known tidbit designed to entice children to read on for more information. Color photographs, a useful glossary, and suggestions for further readings add to the usefulness of each volume. The accessible presentation and clear writing style combined with a high level of detail make the series valuable for simple reports and as a good transition between simple picture books and more serious research materials.
