Woman in America: Her Character and Position as Indicated by Newspaper Editorials, and Sustained by American Social Life

Woman In America: Her Character And Position As Indicated By Newspaper Editorials, And Sustained By American Social Life by M. Farley Emerson is a mid-19th century sociopolitical critique that compiles and analyzes widespread editorials and public discourse about the role of women in American life. The work juxtaposes travelogue passages from Emerson’s American journey with lengthy quotations from newspapers and periodicals that depict women as moral subjects, whose virtue, labor, and very social status are policed by men, law, and social custom. It catalogs sentiments that men should govern, title women as dependent, and treat marriage as women’s primary occupation, all while exposing the contradictions and silences within such rhetoric. Through a chorus of statements and anecdotes—ranging from courtroom notes to social proprieties and sensational tales—the book exposes how editorial voices and popular culture framed women as both indispensable and disposable, often casting female autonomy as a threat to public order. It thereby challenges the assumptions underlying twenty-first-century debates on rights, independence, and citizenship in a pre–Civil War American context.
