An authoritative guide written by a psychiatrist explains depression and its effects, women's inherent risks of developing it from puberty to menopause, and the benefits and disadvantages of current methods of treating it. Original.
Reviews:
In this latest entry in Hyperion's excellent series for women by women, Ferber (psychiatry, Columbia Univ.) and medical writer Levert show how depression affects men and women differently. They cover a variety of types of depression and explain the symptoms of each. After detailing women's unique symptoms, risks, and biology, they devote considerable discussion to choices of treatment, with risks, benefits, and examples described. Each chapter ends with summary questions and answers. An appendix lists national organizations that focus on depressive illnesses, and suggestions for further reading are included. This little book is amazingly comprehensive for its size and covers depression in plain language without talking down to readers. An excellent overview for high school and public library collections.?Catherine T. Charvat, John Marshall Lib., Alexandria, Va.
