(no dust jacket) [moderately shelfworn, binding intact but spine slightly turned, tiny rip in cloth at crown of spine, a bit of fraying at both spine ends; gorgeous vintage custom bookplate (for "Samuels") on ffep, vintage bookseller's label (Newbegin's, San Francisco) on rear pastedown]. Novel about "a marriage between a wealthy Californian and an English girl based on mutual love but nevertheless threatened by the girl's continuing difficulties of adjusting to a life of exhile in California." (Baird & Greenwood 2465). The book was praised by the New York Times reviewer for its "honesty, intelligence, and power of understanding." The author was English-born, but had lived in California (where he'd been involved in land speculation) during the 1880s and 1890s, and drew on that experience for a number of novels (he wrote over fifty, as well as numerous plays, short stories, and essays).
