How Groups Can Plan for Change
Existing women's groups, in addition to making special efforts to extend membership to women who have disabilities, could expand their areas of concern to include women with disability in their locality.
Specialized help is not always needed, for example, to increase opportunities, to improve access of disabled women to assistance, and to change negative attitudes. Much can be accomplished by the following:
** Encouraging the media and other institutions in the community to devote more attention to the situation of women with disabilities, helping them to do so by providing good speakers and good material, including articles by disabled women and interviews with them and their families.
** Encouraging the integration of disabled children in local schools and recreational activities by appropriate preparation of teachers, students and parents of both disabled and non-disabled children.
** Ensuring a follow-up to new community awareness by visiting restaurants, cinemas, theaters, public offices, schools and shops with physically handicapped people to determine whether they are accessible and, if not, keeping up pressure until they are....
