Burgundy cloth, lettered/illus. in gilt, illus. endpapers. Light shelf wear, spine lettering rather faded, text block edges a bit toned by age. Firm binding, clean and unmarked interior beyond former owner's signature (dated Christmas 1930) on upper front pastedown, all color plates present and fully intact. x,207 pp., illus. w/ (15) full page color plates including frontis. Please note that this 1928 printing is not strictly a reprint of the earlier (1922) Doran edition, which contained a total of (24) plates; the '28 printing contains (9) fewer plates, including the original Pandora frontis. and (7) Japanese-style wood cut prints. The "List of Illustrations" on p. ix is a revised listing consistent with the '28 printing, but the verso (p. x) contains a partial set of entries beginning with p. 84 that is identical to the listing found in the 1922 edition; clearly the publishers neglected to remove p. x when they replaced p. ix. Additionally, several of the plates are sized approx. 1/8-1/4" shorter than the text block, leaving a short gap between bottom plate edge and bottom text block edge, but none was removed or trimmed, clearly original to issue. The gilt cover and spine illustration and lettering are identical to those of the 1922 edition, which was bound in red rather than burgundy. Main title dated 1928, no statement of edition or printing. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
