A very scarce copy of this facsimile work.Originally published in 1693, with no editions produced in between.With a frontispiece and facsimile original title page.A work by Cotton Mather that defendsMather's role in thewitch-huntconducted inSalem, Massachusetts.It espoused the belief thatwitchcraftwas an evilmagicalpower. Mather saw witches as tools of the devil in Satan's battle to "overturn this poor plantation, the Puritan colony", and prosecution of witches as a way to secure God's blessings for the colony.With a farther account of the tryals by Increase Mather, the father of the author, as well as aNew EnglandPuritanclergyman who served as the sixthpresident of Harvard Collegefrom 1685 to 1701. In full maroon cloth binding. Externally, smart. Fading to spine, with bumping to the head and tail. Light mark to rear board. Front hinge cracked but firm. Rear hinge cracked, and slightly fragile to the head and tail. Ink inscription to front free endpaper. Blind stamp to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with spotting and age toning, most significant to the front of the work. Very Good.
