About this Item

First Edition]. Original green cloth, 667 pages. Foreword by Field-Marshal Sir Claud Jacob. Massive work of military historical documentation, illustrated throughout with portraits, plates, plans, maps (many fold-outs) etc. The Worcesters was one of the most distinguished and decorated regiments of the British military serving in World War I, with battalions on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, Macedonia, Mesopotamia, Italy, and Northern Persia. One of its most honorable members, attached to the RFC, was the airman Leefe Robinson, famous for shooting down a zeppelin. Included are various appendices, providing a Roll of Honour; Honours and Awards including Mention in Despatches, with date of Gazette (for Companion of the British Empire read Commander); details of Badges, Colours and Distinctions of the regiment; and the music for regimental marches. A work of incredible detail and sensitivity, offering the reader an unparalleled view of a pivotal time in world history - battle by battle, plan by plan. Ownership notations, relating to the text, in pencil on the front free endpaper. Black cloth tape reinforcements to the inner hinges. Near fine copy with just a faint trace of dampstaining to the top edge of a few pages at the rear without dust jacket as issued. Scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 14743E
