Words To A Former Flock. A Sermon Preached In St. Matthias's Church, Dublin, On Sunday, January 24Th, 1869 by Maurice Fitzgerald Day. This sermon, delivered by the Dean of Limerick, exhorts believers to cultivate a living faith grounded in love for Christ and for others, and to seek growth in knowledge and judgment to guide that love rightly. Day acknowledges a dual concern: the spiritual welfare of those who have not yet embraced Christ, and the need for those who are true believers to live sincere, blameless lives. He cautions against hardening the heart, and warns against internal divisiveness and external threats to Protestant life in Ireland, including opposition to certain endowments and the spread of what he calls ritualistic error. The sermon champions charity and the fruits of righteousness, not merely almsgiving, but temperate, consistent virtue. It also advocates support for the Church Education Society, emphasizing trained teachers and school inspectors as essential to national well?being. The address closes with prayers for guidance and a steady witness for Christ.
