The Words of the Lord Jesus

The Words Of The Lord Jesus by Rudolf Stier is Volume Fifth of a dense exegetical series that surveys the Gospel of John, here covering John 4–5 (Part 1 of 4) and the surrounding chapters, including John 9–10. It provides verse-by-verse analysis of Jesus’ self-revelation, the Father’s drawing, the Spirit’s work, and the conflict with unbelief. The work foregrounds themes such as the living water and worship in Spirit and truth, the twofold meaning of freedom, and the unity of Father and Son, mediated by the Spirit. It traces a narrative arc from the Samaritan encounter through the healing and confrontations in Jerusalem, highlighting how signs function to awaken faith rather than merely impress. The author argues that true knowledge comes from divine revelation and obedience, not human learning, and that the gospel’s universal scope extends beyond Israel. The commentary also notes scholarly debates on textual readings while defending a robust, scripturally grounded interpretation.
