The Words and Works of Our Blessed Lord and Their Lessons for Daily Life, by the Author of 'Brampton Rectory'

The Words And Works Of Our Blessed Lord And Their Lessons For Daily Life, By The Author Of 'Brampton Rectory' — Mary Matilda Howard. This two-volume Victorian devotional expository work begins with the aim of bringing the lessons of the Gospels into intimate contact with everyday life, not merely to explain events but to illuminate their implications for domestic reading, Bible classes, and private study. The volume (Vol. I, first published in 1860 in London) traverses the Gospel narratives in a progressive sequence from the introductory overview of Jesus' pre-natal and public ministry to detailed sections on the calling of the first disciples, Cana, the cleansing of the temple, Nicodemus, the Woman of Samaria, and the miracles that reveal his authority. Interlacing scripture with reflection, it emphasizes practical virtue—humility, mercy, purity of heart, forgiveness, and steadfast faith—in a style that combines scholarly notes with devotional exhortation. The author often presses readers to translate belief into action, applying Christ's teaching to home life, education, and community, and to view the Sermon on the Mount as a blueprint for daily conduct.
