All Work and No Play: The Misunderstood Masterpiece of Jack Torrance

Most people had considered the original manuscript of Jack Torrance's fabled novel All Work and No Play lost to time-its physical existence dismissed by the masses as mere rumor or urban legend. But the manuscript absolutely survived and, for the first time, is officially presented here to the general public in its complete, original, unabridged, and unaltered form.

After years of persistence, literary scholar Thomas Huff persuaded the Torrance Literary Estate that, in his hands, All Work and No Play would be treated with the respect and dignity it deserved and a publication agreement was finally reached.

Due to the unconventional formatting of the prose, the manuscript then underwent an exhaustive transcription process to ensure every detail of the original text was reproduced exactly as typed by Torrance in 1978. The result serves as a long-overdue celebration of this under-appreciated visionary author's most infamous work.

Jack Torrance was an exceptional writer by any measure. Though, during his lifetime, his level of financial and critical success ranged only from slight to moderate, his final offering, All Work and No Play, would become notorious in underground circles and finally be published for the general public in its complete and unaltered form in 2022--some 44 years after its creation.

Editor Thomas Huff worked closely with the Torrance Literary Estate to finely bring this underappreciated masterpiece into print, and includes his extensive foreword that dives deep into Torrance's inspirations, motivations, and general mental state, and examines many hypotheses of Torrance's thinking as he composed it: its context, the subtext, what he intended it to be, what it's about, and where its core themes and ideas may have come from.
