4to, 211 sheets, photo-mechanically reproduced on rectos. With several holograph notes in Shepard's hand to cover, which reads "Unfinished - Working Manuscript. Please Do Not Copy! SS." Another note in Shepard's hand, this in red ink, reads "Larry S. copy corrections cuts" here crossed out. A final note reads "Copy not complete 10/9/08." Another date in the upper right hand corner; 9/30/08. With numerous changes and deletions throughout, about 3/4 "in plate", and the remainder some in holograph ink in three colors and pencil, in both Shepard's hand and two others in dialogue, one belonging to Michael Smith and the other unknown to us.Provenance: from the collection of Shepard's collaborator Michael Smith, whose 1964 review of Cowboy's and the Rock Garden at St. Mark's was influential in bringing Shepard's work to a wider audience, and who directed Shepard's early play Icarus's Daughter at the Caffe Cino. A working manuscript for Shepard's 2010 book Day Out of Days. The Larry S. of the note on cover is likely Larry Shainberg, whose name is on the list of people thanked. There are myriad differences between this manuscript and the finished work, including word and sequence changes and deletions to most of the stories in the published work. We find 10 texts in the manuscript which do not appear in the published version: "Weed, California: (Highway 5)," a five pages story, with a note in Shepard s hand - a question mark and the word "trim" in paranthesis - an untitled poem which begins "the way the Bluejay," "Maverick Junction, So. Dakota" (with a note in Shepard s hand cut ") "Trail of Tears" (with a lenghty note in an unknown hand, and a response in Shepard s hand, reading Sequence? " "Stillwater, Minnesota" "River Falls, Wisconsin: (Highway JJ0" "Teeth" "Feet" "Only Me and No More" "Isis" (with a note in SS s hand - "cut") The final story, here titled "Andalusia," has a note reading "re-title", and is changed to "Gracias" in the published work. A superb manuscript which differs significantly from the published work, and which illuminates the editorial process between Shepard and at least two other readers.
