Reviews
Some may question why women need their own guide to prepare for retirement. Patterson, an attorney and director of employee benefits policy, expertly highlights the special needs of women in this thorough overview. She explains why saving for retirement is different and more difficult for women. For example, she points out that variations in work patterns--staying home to raise children, moving with a spouse--can have unforeseen effects on retirement benefits. A woman who takes just seven years away from the job during a 40-year career may get half the benefits received by someone who stayed in the work force for the entire 40 years. Patterson emphasizes the importance of personal savings and demonstrates how to invest these savings to insure a comfortable and secure retirement. A glossary is appended as are numerous tables to help calculate future benefit income. This would be a good purchase for all library collections.
