London, 1770-1771, UNCOMMON 15 volume set of Pope's works, in matching original bindings. Small 8vo, full leather with leather labels (all present) in good minus condition with wear at heads, heels, hinges and edges, comprising 3 sets: 6 volumes, "The Works of Alexander Pope Esq. in Six Volumes Complete.Printed Verbatim from the Octavo editon of Mr. Warburton", and "Containing his Juvenile Poems and Translations" (V. 1). Printed for Bathurst, Strahan, Rivington et al, 1770. Professional mending tissue temporarily secures detached front boards of Volume 1 and volume 2, and the neat split down the middle of the spine of volume 2. All other volumes are good, as noted above. The next 5 volumes are Pope's translation of "Homer's Iliad", published for Whiston Baker, Leigh, Strahan, Payne, Rivington et al, 1771. Double engraved frontispiece (Homer bust and Pope) and a folding map of "Graecia Homerica" (V. 1). The final 4 volumes are Pope's translation of "Homer's Odyssey", published for Whiston Baker, Leigh, Strahan, Payne, Rivington et al, 1771. Alexander Pope's translations of the works introduced to the world the heroic couplet, a syntactical form that would become famous for future translations as well as other epics. Samuel Johnson pronounced Pope's Iliad, "the greatest translation ever achieved in English or in any other language". Provenance: "CRUX SCOTUM" (Shield of the Cros), engraved armorial bookplate of George de Ligne Gregory [1740-1822] on all front pastedowns. Gregory had holdings in various canal and railway companies and was appointed as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire in 1793. Gregory Gregory was an avid book collector. The set is noted in the The Library Collection at Old Harlaxton Manor, 1822, among a substantial collection of 2818 volumes, 714 titles. Gregory's book collection was inherited by the Welby family of Denton, which library sale took place 9 December 1938. Not available for priority/expedited shipping.
