Print on Demand. This book, written circa 1722, is an assemblage of religious and medicinal antidotes and preparations for society facing the plague. It was written by a seasoned observer of the Great Plague of London of 1665 who penned their insights within a decade of the event and offers an overview of the medical knowledge of the time. This book draws upon the author's firsthand experiences witnessing the plague's capricious and deadly rampage. While medical science has progressed since this book's creation, its historical and religious insights provide valuable context for understanding how people coped with the plague in the 18th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

Dive into Defoe's gripping tales and vivid historical sketches, gathered for today’s readers.
This edition presents a curated selection from Daniel Defoe’s romance and narrative writings, including bold stories of plague, superstition, and high-seas adventure. The material is framed with scholarly introductions and notes that help place these works in context while preserving the brisk, readable style that has drawn readers for generations.
Readers will encounter a mix of the dramatic and the documentary: dramatic narratives that feel almost like history, alongside observational sketches of life in early modern Britain and the wider world. The tone blends vivid storytelling with the moral and practical preoccupations that marked Defoe’s writing.
- The Dumb Philosopher and other works on belief, society, and fate
- A True Relation of the Apparition of Mrs. Veal, a well-known ghost story by Defoe
- The Destruction of the Isle of St. Vincent, a historical narrative with broader reflections
- The King of Pirates and Lives of Six Notorious Robbers, dramatic tales of crime, pursuit, and consequences
Ideal for readers who enjoy classic early modern prose, brisk narratives, and a window into Defoe’s wide range of storytelling.

All Forgotten Books titles are printed on demand. The moment an order is submitted, it is automatically transmitted to our distributor and then forwarded to the printer, where it enters production. This process begins within minutes and is entirely automated.

For this reason, we kindly ask that you double-check the title, edition, and your shipping details before placing an order.
If you change your mind after ordering, you are welcome to return the book once it arrives, and a refund will be issued in accordance with AbeBooks’ return policy.
Please also make sure your address is correct before ordering as we will no be able to intervene and make changes before the book is shipped.
We can provide digital samples for all our print books ahead, so don't hesitate to reach out.
Returns
As a small publisher we do not have the facilities to resell returned books, so any returned book will be recycled. If the book is damaged or defective please continue with the return process, and thank you for letting us know so that we can improve our products. If you’re returning for another reason, however, please consider whether you could donate or gift the book instead so that it avoids the waste pile.
