xvi, 437 pages; green cloth binding with gilt lettering. Top and bottom of the spine show wear, corners slightly bumped; former owner's name stamped in book several times 'Jessie B. Swift'. Several small stains on the cover, and a 3/4 inch split to the binding on the front cover hinge. The English translation of Epictetus (55-135AD) taken from his student, Arrian's writings when he 'quotes' Epictetus. 'He taught that philosophy is a way of life, not just a theoretical discipline'. Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806) translated the Latin in 1758 into English. She was a noted female writer and translator of the 18th century and a member of the 'Bluestocking Circle'.
