Folio. Pp. 12 p.l., 543, [1]. With general title and 4 section titles, woodcut ornaments and initials. Contemporary full calf with double gilt fillet border, neatly rebacked with blind rules between raised bands, morocco lettering piece, gilt, marbled endpapers. Covers worn with corners exposed, opening leaves noticeably foxed, some marginal foxing and browning to text, a few marginal annotations in an old hand, ownership inscription in Latin on front blank dated 1810, but on the whole a good copy. The Third Collected Edition of Machiavelli's Works in English, containing "The History of Florence", "The Discourses on Titus Livy", "The Prince", "The Art of War", and other writings. The first edition was published in 1675. The unnamed translator was Henry Neville [1620-1694], a political and miscellaneous writer and a Republican opponent of Oliver Cromwell, who was much admired by Hobbes for his "Plato Redivivus, or a Dialogue Concerning Government" [1681], which proposed a scheme for the exercise of the royal prerogative through councils of state responsible to parliament.
