A complete set of the works of French satirist Francis Rabelais, with an array of unique illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. Complete in two volumes. Privately Printed for The Navarre Society. Volume one is illustrated with a frontispiece and fifty-five full-page illustrations. With volume two being illustrated with a frontispiece and forty-three full-page illustrations. The collected works of notable French Renaissance writer, Francois Rabelais, who has been called the first great French prose author. He was also recognised as a doctor, Renaissance humanist, monk and Greek scholar. Rabelais' works are notable for their bawdy, satirical nature, with a style so distinct that the Oxford English Dictionary uses his name as the adjective "Rabelaisian" to describe writings as "marked by gross robust humor, extravagance of caricature, or bold naturalism". This two volume set contains his best-known work, the Gargantua-Pantagruel series of four books. Illustrated by William Heath Robinson, an English cartoonist, illustrator and artist who drew whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives. In the original cream cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spines. The odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with age toning to the endpapers. Some of the text block of volume two remains unopened. Very Good Indeed.…
