The Works of George Berkeley: Including Many of His Writings Hitherto Unpublished. With Prefaces, Annotations, His Life and Letters, and an Account of His Philosophy

"The Works Of George Berkeley: Including Many Of His Writings Hitherto Unpublished. With Prefaces, Annotations, His Life And Letters, And An Account Of His Philosophy" by George Berkeley. This scholarly edition gathers Berkeley's eighteenth?century writings, combining mathematical treatises, religious philosophy, public morality, colonial evangelism, and polemical critiques of contemporary science. The included material showcases his early mathematical works, pedagogical experiments and discussions on motion, as well as essays on public governance, patriotism, and social reform. The volume foregrounds Berkeley’s aim to ground knowledge, virtue, and civil life in religious and moral principles, while contesting nominal atheism and the limitations of Newtonian physics. It also documents his practical engagements—tar-water as a widely circulated remedy, debates on currency and banking, and efforts to promote education, public works, and missionary activity. Across these pieces, the guiding thread is the harmony and tension between religion and public life, with a constant appeal to reason, virtue, and communal welfare.
