A smart limited edition set of the works of English writer, George Borrow. With the original dust wrappers. Ten volumes of a sixteen volume set. Lacking volumes eleven to sixteen. Limited to seven hundred and seventy-five copies of which this is number thirty-two. The works of George Henry Borrow, an English writer of novels and of travel based on personal experiences in Europe. Particularly his time spent with the Romani people of Europe, who figure strongly in his work. Edited by Clement King Shorter, a British journalist and literary critic. This set includes: The Bible in Spain, volumes I and II. A travel book telling of the author's travels through Spain while working as a Bible salesman in 1835–1838, during the Carlist Civil War, where he encountered much opposition from the Roman Catholic Church and politicians. Lavengro, volumes I and II. Settled between a memoir and novel, following George, the son of an officer in a militia regiment, who takes to the road as a tinker and often associates with Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and generally sympathetic pen-portraits. The Romany Rye, volumes I and II. The sequel to Lavengro, thought to be at least partly autobiographical. It follows the journey of a learned young man living with Romanies and is considered a philosophical adventure story. Songs, Poems and Ballads, volumes I, II, and III. A collection of songs, romantic ballads, miscellaneous verses, and poems. The Zincali. A story exploring the living and culture of the Romani people, particularly in Spain, with a dictionary of the Romani language or list of vocabulary to the end of the text. Previously held in the library of Augustine Birrell, a British Liberal Party politician, who was Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1907 to 1916. In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines and the board edges. Original unclipped dust wrappers are worn with wear and chipping to the extremities. Sunning to the spine and repairs made with tape. Light loss to the head and tail of the spine from chipping with marks to the panels and the odd closed tear. The odd small tide mark. Wrapper of volume one has loss to the spine and is in two pieces, with tears to the remaining spine panel. Volume three is lacking the rear panel and flyleaf with sympathetic repairs with tape to the spine. A 4" closed tear to the spine of volume four. Loss to the head of the spine of volume five. A 3" closed tear to the spine of volume seven repaired with tape. Light loss to the head of the spine of volume eight. A 4" closed tear to the spine of volume ten. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good.…
