Eight-volume complete set of George Eliot's works in decorative and attractive dark blue bindings. Library edition from Wm. L. Allison publishers in octavo. No date, but inscription reads 'Effin W. Boren, Christmas 1889, from papa.' Probably an 1889 edition. Contains: Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch; Scenes of Clerical Life; Silas Marner; Brother Jacob; Romola; Daniel Deronda; Felix Holt; Impressions of Theophrastus Such; Spanish Gypsy; and collected Poems and Essays. Set is uncommon. This set is in true Good condition, unusual for a set so old; the library bindings have proven durable. Dark blue covers with botanical decorations show rubbing at edges, rounding at corners, and some finger-damage to top and bottom of spine, but all in all good. Bindings strong and durable, unusually so; still perfectly usable as reading copies. Compact format (octavo) and limited number of volumes means the set fits easily into a working collection of books. Name of former owner on front flypapers, but otherwise no marks noted in text. Pages show only the mildest of tanning. All in all a pretty set for a lover of George Eliot, and a fine reference to have on hand for someone who wants all her works in one place.
