DEC was established at Chapel Bank Workington as an arc furnace plant for making special grade steel during World War II and post war was developed by its owners, United Steel, into the biggest iron foundry in Europe and a heavy engineering works that specialized in steelworks and mining etc plant and equipment and latterly continuous casting machinery internationally. Now very sadly closed down.
