Thirty-nine Volume Set. Original calf with leather labels on backstrips. Most volumes are in very good condition, and a handful of volumes are in good only condition. Some volumes have had minor professional repair. There are very periodic cracks in the joints. Volumes 18, 24, and 39 have cracks in the text blocks at the beginning, and the front cover of volume 18 is nearly detached. The first gathering of volume 39 is loose. Page 1 in volume 13 is partially detached, and pp. 193-196 in this volume have been slashed, with some minor loss to the text. Several of the volumes have sporadic large tide marks to the top thirds of the pages. Housed in publisher's wood bookcase with glass doors with "Bancroft's Work" painted across the top. This custom bookcase is quite uncommon. We have sold many sets of 'Bancroft's Works' over the years and this is the first time that we are offering this important set with the lovely craftsman style bookcase. Volume 1 (7 maps - 3 double page, 4 large fold-outs); Volume 2 (1 large fold-out map, 1 large fold-out table); Volume 4 (1 large fold-out map); Volume 5 (2 fold-out maps); Volume 6 (1 fold-out map); Volume 9 (1 fold-out map); Volume 10 (1 fold-out map); Volume 11 (1 large folding map); Volume 15 (1 fold-out map); Volume 17 (1 fold-out map); Volume 27 (1 folding map); Volume 29 (1 fold-out map); Volume 32 (1 folding map-***torn in half). Monumental collection of Western history in the scarce publisher's book case. This set covers the history and to some extent the anthropology of Central America, Mexico, and the American West of the United States. Bancroft had formed a large collection of source materials on the history of the American West and decided to write the definitive work on the subject. He employed assistants to prepare statements of the facts for large sections of the proposed history. Originally, he intended to use these statements as the basis of a narrative from his own hand, but as the work progressed he came to use them with slight changes. We have his own word that the assistants were capable investigators and there is independent evidence to show that some of them deserved his confidence. Bancroft considered himself the author of the series. According to Howes: "Colossal co-operative undertaking; nothing approaching it has ever been attempted in this country". Flake/Draper 282, 283, 284, 286, 289, 290, 291, 292. Howes B87. Bookseller Inventory #
