About this Item
A scarce edition of John Lettsom's editorial of the writings of influential physician John Fothergill. From the library of British pharmacologist, Alfred Joseph Clark. John Fothergill wrote on a multitude of subjects. His expertise is conveyed through his multidisciplinary writings. He focussed greatly on botany and conchology in his leisure in addition to his important medical writings. Fothergill was responsible for giving the first known lecture on mouth-to-mouth ventilation and is credited with first identifying trigeminal neuralgia. He also wrote one of the earliest descriptions of thestreptococcal sore throat and was pro-inoculation against small pox. This work contains writings such as 'an account of the Putrid Sore Throat', 'Extract of an Essay on the Origin of Amber' and 'An Historical Account of Coffee'.Edited by physician and philanthropist John Coakley Lettsom. Lettsom was the protege of Fothergill's brother and commenced his own medical training through the influence of Dr Fothergill.Illustrated, with a frontispiece and ten plates. The plates 'Arbutus Andrachne', 'Winterana Aromatica', 'Mimosa Japonica' and 'Coffea Arabica' are repeated with one plate monochrome and the second hand-coloured. This therefore takes the illustration total to fifteen. With the final advertisement leaf. From the library of British pharmacologist and professor Alfred Joseph Clark.
