The Second Edition Corrected. The first printed in 1721. Engraved folding frontispiece portrait by G. Vertue after Kneller (some repair on verso), and folding plate of tomb (some repairs on verso) which is supposed to be in second volume is in first. Divisional titles with each separate work. 2 vols. Includes his tragedies "Julius Caesar" and "Marcus Brutus" based on Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar." 'some Account of the Revolution" (a2-e1; pp. [iii]-xxxiv) and "A Feast of the Gods" (e2-f2 ; pp. [xxxv]-xliv) have been inserted. Pope wrote two of the choruses in "Marcus Brutus." After Pope issued the first edition the government authorities sent for the impression and cut out these two pieces as they were thought to be Jacobite in tendency. This edition of 1729 did not include them (DNB) but the original binder or owner must have added them. Foxon I, p. 724 Contemporary speckled calf,stamped in gilt).
