The Works Of Joseph Addison: The Freeholder. Swift's Notes On The Free-Holder. The Plebian, By Sir Richard Steele, With The Old Whig, By Mr. Addison. The Lover is a 19th?century edition that gathers four celebrated eighteenth?century political writings: Addison's Freeholder, Steele's Plebeian, Addison's Old Whig, and Myrtle's The Lover. The volume presents a sequence of political essays and fictional dialogues that critique and defend government, liberty, and religion in the wake of the Hanoverian succession and the Jacobite risings. The Freeholder uses the persona of a country landholder to argue for loyalty to King George and to satirize dissent; The Plebeian and The Old Whig examine parliamentary power, the balance between crown, Lords and Commons, and the dangers of radical reform; The Lover, a witty set of love?and?society sketches, offers social satire on manners, gender, and court life. The edition includes introductory material and notes by editor George Washington Greene; it situates Addison and Steele’s collaborations within the political culture of early 18th?century Britain. The collection remains a vivid, accessible portrait of early modern political wit.
