The Works of Joseph Hall: Contemplations on the Old and New Testaments

The Works Of Joseph Hall: Contemplations On The Old And New Testaments by Joseph Hall. The work presents a devotional, historical-theological meditation that treats biblical history as a record of Providential activity—God guiding peoples and leaders to fulfill a divine plan. It surveys the Old Testament post-exilic era, illuminating how Zerubbabel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and other figures navigate temple building, reform, and deliverance under Persian rule, with attention to temple worship, covenant faithfulness, and moral reform amid political maneuvering. The New Testament portion frames Luke–Matthew contemplations on the Incarnation and the early church, emphasizing divine orchestration in Nazareth, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Galilee as well as the universality of salvation beyond Israel. Throughout both sections, recurring motifs include divine providence and timing, reform and renewal, humility versus ambition, faith under pressure, and the universal reach of God’s salvific plan. The intended audience is devotional readers seeking moral and spiritual formation through careful scriptural meditation.
