The Works of the Late Aaron Hill, Esq; .: Letters

The Works Of The Late Aaron Hill, Esq;.: Letters by Aaron Hill is a multi-volume collection from the 18th century comprising Hill’s extensive private correspondence. This volume gathers the section commonly titled Original Letters, revealing Hill’s engagements as a dramatist, critic, and public commentator. The letters address a wide circle of contemporaries, including actors, managers, poets, and patrons, and provide candid insights into theatre practice, acting technique, and dramaturgical theory. Across correspondence with figures such as Garrick, Mallet, and Pope, Hill discusses the craft of tragedy, the interpretation of Shakespeare’s works (notably Caesar), and the philosophy of stage performance, often arguing for fidelity to character, moral purpose, and the demands of an audience. The collection also contains practical debates about reviving classic plays, publishing ventures, and even outside topics like colonial schemes and Bermuda wine experiments, illustrating the breadth of Hill’s intellectual and professional concerns in the 1730s and 1740s.
