The Works: With His Life. Lectures

The Works: With His Life. Lectures by Beilby Porteus collects his Lent lectures on the Gospel of Matthew, delivered in his parish church of St. James, Westminster, during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and published as part of a six-volume biographical project. This volume, Volume IV, contains the Lectures, which survey the contents of Scripture, introduce and defend the Gospel accounts, and expound Jesus’ life, birth narratives, baptism, temptation, miracles, Sermon on the Mount, parables, and the Apostles’ ministry. Porteus argues for the divine authority of Scripture, the Messiahship of Christ, the necessity of repentance, humility, and moral reform, and aims to edify believers while addressing skeptics confronted by contemporary infidel writings. The work blends exegesis with practical morality, urging readers to pursue piety, prayer, and virtuous public life under a Christian conscience and civil obedience.
