The Works and Life of Walter Savage Landor: Second Series of Imaginary Conversations and the Pentameron

The Works And Life Of Walter Savage Landor: Second Series Of Imaginary Conversations And The Pentameron by Walter Savage Landor. This volume presents a sequence of satirical dialogues in Landor’s Imaginary Conversations tradition, spanning debates among famous rulers, statesmen, and clerics about sovereignty, religion, reform, and governance. The dialogues mock power, cunning, and the manipulation of public perception, exploring liberty, reform, and the role of religion and state in society. Sections such as XVI. MR. PITT AND MR. CANNING, XVII. MAHOMET AND SERGIUS, XVIII. FILIPPO LIPPI AND POPE EUGENIUS IV, XIX. WILLIAM WALLACE AND KING EDWARD I, XX. WILLIAM PENN AND LORD PETERBOROUGH, and later pairings with Wellington, Franklin, Sheridan, Louis XVIII, Talleyrand, Romilly, and Wilberforce, intertwine political satire with literary critique. The Pentameron interlude (Boccaccio and Petrarca) frames discussions of Dante, Virgil, and the craft of poetry, yielding a panoramic meditation on power, faith, and culture.
