Leather sunned to the boards, rubbed and worn. In four volumes complete. With illustrated and letterpress title pages to all volumes. Containing: Volume I - xii, 468pp. Including Poetical Works, Drama, and The Vicar of Wakefield. Volume II - [vi], 5-487pp. An Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe; The Citizen of the World. Volume III - iv, 447pp. The Bee; Essays; Unacknowledged Essays; Prefaces Introductions, Etc. Volume IV - 450pp. Biographies; Reviews; Animated Nature; Cock Lane Ghost; Vida's Game of Chess; Letters; Index. Oliver Goldsmith (1730 - 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet, who is best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766), his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770), and his plays The Good-Natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771, first performed in 1773). He also wrote An History of the Earth and Animated Nature. He is thought to have written the classic children's tale The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes. Approximately 9 inches tall. Provenance: no signatures or bookplates. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles to twin red and brown labels, five gilt raised bands, rubbed, git stamped compartments. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition rubbed and worn. Boards good condition gilt titles (School) to front boards, marks and scratches, sun faded. Page edges good condition top edges darkened, all edges marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition secure. Paste downs good condition marbled. End papers good condition marbled, subsequent end papers foxed and tanned. Title good condition pictorial title pages with vignettes, gently foxed and tanned, letterpress title pages tanned.
