Volume I of the works of Ossian, translated from the Gaelic language by James Macpherson. The third edition of this work, rebacked with the original calf laid down to the boards, and a later addition of morocco to the spine. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1766. This is the first volume of a two-volume set of The Works Of Ossian, The Son of Fingal. This volume contains Fingal, an Ancient Epic Poem, in Six Books; and Several Other Poems. In 1761, Macpherson announced the discovery of an epic on the subject of Fingal supposedly written by Ossian, which he published in December of that year. The narrative was related to the Irish mythological character Fionn mac Cumhaill/Finn McCool. The figure of Ossian was based on Fionn's son Oisín. Another related poem, Temora, followed in 1763, and then this collected edition in 1765. The authenticity of Macpherson's translations was challenged by Irish historians, especially Charles O'Conor. Samuel Johnson asserted that Macpherson had found fragments of poems and stories, and then woven them into a romance of his own composition. Rebacked with the original calf laid down to the boards, and a later addition of morocco to the spine. Externally sound. Small losses to the spine label and original calf to the boards. Extremities are lightly rubbed. Front hinge is starting but held firmly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to the first and last few pages. Very Good.
