The imaginative French writer, François Rabelais, is known for his outlandish tales, satire, and comic genius. This massive tome of his work includes five books profusely illustrated by Doré with author prologues.
First published in the 16th century, Gargantua and Pantagruel is a timeless, fantastic, and vulgar story of giants on an incredible adventure. Though Rabelais’ writing is vivid on its own, the charismatic and comical artwork of renowned artist Gustave Doré (Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost) enhances the thrilling tale with timeless drawings for young and old alike.
Fans of Doré’s lighthearted work for books like Droll Stories, Don Quixote, and The Adventures of Baron Von Munchhausen will find themselves immersed in the artist’s depictions of giants causing mischief on a gargantuan scale!
Table of Contents:
Book I
- Of the Genealogy and Antiquity of Gargantua
Book II
- Of the Originality and Antiquity of the Great Pantagruel
Book III
- How Pantagruel Transported a Colony of Utopians into Dipsodie
Book IV
- How Pantagruel went to Sea to Visit the Oracle Bacbuc, Alias the Holy Bottle
Book V
- How Pantagruel Arrived at the Ringing Island and of the Noise that We Heard
