The Works of Sallust

The Works Of Sallust by Sallust The Works Of Sallust presents a late Republican portrait that blends narrative history, political oratory, diplomacy, and political theory across Rome and Africa. It traces the Jugurthine War in Numidia, where Jugurtha, Bocchus, Sylla, and Marius maneuver for advantage as ambassadors are seized, alliances shift, and Rome's war fortunes hinge on a volatile balance between discipline and populist ambition. The text also surveys Roman political maneuvering against figures like Lepidus, Pompey’s appeals to the Senate, Mithridates's memorandum against Rome, and Sallust’s Epistles to Caesar, which advocate reform to restore liberty and curb corruption. Central themes examine the tension between liberty and power, the corrupting influence of money, the fragility of the Senate, and the perils of civil conflict when elites pursue power. The edition includes translator’s preface, introductory essays, and the opening discourse 'Of Faction and Parties,' outlining how faction, rhetoric, and moral exhortation shape political life. It serves as both history and political philosophy with cautionary lessons for governance.
