IT is an unfounded complaint that is urged by mankind, concerning the imbecility of their condition, and the shortness of life; a state, as they allege, of perpetual vicissitude; placed at the mercy of Chance, rather than under the guidance of Virtue. On due consideration, notwithstanding, we shall find, that man, above all creatures, is gifted with excellence and energy; although the one he degrades, and the other he misapplies; in his pursuits far more frequently without diligence than talents to direct it, or time for their exertion. Mind is the great presiding principle that regulates human life. If the mind.make choice of the road of virtue, and aspire totrueglory through that path; of innate imbecility, or the dominion of accident, there will be no longer any complaint. The human character will then shine forth, in all its lustre, superior to fortune, and independent of her gifts. For over integrity, diligence, and the other qualities, fortune is possessed of no power: She is unable to bestow them, and she cannot take them away. But if, impelled by appetite, or seduced by passion, the mind ignobly sink under the dominion of sense, vice and indolence impose their fetters, and habit gradually rivets them. Corruption once begun, it soon takes root in the heart. Our vigour relaxes: The flame of genius is extinguished; and time passes away without improvement.
