A handsomely bound two volume set of the 1893-1896 Imperial Edition of Shakespeare's works, with beautifully illustrated plates throughout. Morocco binding, complete two volume set.A handsomely bound set of poet and playwright William Shakespeare's works, published in 1893-1896. Undated internally, so was dated on Jisc from a similar copy found in the British Library.Illustrated with two frontispieces and vignettes, as well as thirty-seven black-and-white plates.This Imperial Edition of William Shakespeare's works includes a 'Notice of the Original Editions of the Plays' at the beginning of Volume I, explaining the format of the first folio edition of 1623, which 'must be received as the only accredited copy'. Volume II ends with 'A Brief Notice of Opinion on the Writings of Shakspere' by editor Charles Knight to rear.This set includes thirty six plays, five poems, one song, one set of verses, and thirteen of the plays that have been ascribed to Shakespeare. Notable works include 'The Taming of the Shrew', 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'King Richard III', 'King Lear', and 'Macbeth'.Volume I contains Shakespeare's Comedies and Histories, while Volume II contains Histories continued from Volume I, as well as Tragedies, Poems, and 'Plays Ascribed to Shakspere'. The Comedies and Tragedies have been arranged according to the evidence of the dates of their composition, while the Histories follow the chronology of the several king's reigns.Edited by Charles Knight, an English publisher, editor, and author, who established the Local Government Chronicle.Prior owner's initials to front board as well as bookplate on front pastedown of both volumes- John Geach Rome, Trelawney, Wyke Regis.Both volumes collated and complete. In morocco binding with gilt illustration to front boards and spine. Externally, very smart. Good colour to leather, with bright gilt on boards. The gilt has faded very slightly on spine. A bit of wear to extremities and spine, particularly to head and tail. Prior owner's bookplate on front pastedowns, with ink inscription on Volume II's bookplate. Binder's label to verso of front endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and generally clean, with a few scattered spots particularly to the first and last few pages. Plates are bright and clean. Pages on opposite side of plates have become slightly discoloured and age-toned. Very Good. Seller Inventory # 804D23

Leather. Condition: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A desirable copy of the Imperial Edition of the Works of Shakespeare, profusely illustrated throughout. This particular volume is two volumes bound in three. In a uniform half calf binding, with gilt detailing to the front board of each. Undated, dated using Copac. Originally bound in two volumes, this work has been rebound into three uniform volumes. Featuring the works of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare, and an additional biography to the rear of volume III. The biography, additional notes, and prefaces featured in this set are by Charles Knight the English publisher, editor and author. Born in 1791, Knight was the son of a bookseller and printer entered him into the world of publishing from an early age. After a time as a journalist, and after publishing several of his own works, he became the editor of 'The English Cyclopaedia' in 1853. Profusely illustrated throughout with numerous plates, totalling 44 plate and 2 vignettes. Two plates have been misbound, with a plate being used as a frontispiece to volume II. One plate has been tipped in with colour, most likely by a previous owner. Collated complete. A important edition of the works of Shakespeare with intelligent and informed observations by Knight throughout. In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards and gilt details to the front boards. Externally rubbed to the head and tail of the spine, joint and extremities. This rubbing has resulted in loss to the leather of the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book. Seller Inventory # 624C28
