The Works of Sir John Suckling: Containing His Poems, Letters, and Plays

"The Works Of Sir John Suckling: Containing His Poems, Letters, And Plays" by John Suckling is a comprehensive collection of the 17th-century English writer’s oeuvre. This edition gathers Suckling’s lyric poetry and love poems, along with his broader verse and occasional pieces, and pairs them with a selection of his letters to eminent contemporaries and a number of his dramatic works. The volume opens with a Preface that sketches Suckling’s life and career, noting his birth in 1613, his parentage, and his death at age twenty-eight, and placing his writings in a lively courtly-and-societal context. The Poems reveal the poet’s urbane wit, passion, and playful yet serious meditations on love, fidelity, fame, and the tensions between appearance and reality. The Letters provide insight into his social and political networks, as well as his views on Love, religion, and statecraft. The Plays display early Restoration-era dramatic experimentation, blending classical form with contemporary satire. Overall, the works present Suckling as a brilliant, agile voice whose brief life produced a lasting, multifaceted body of verse and prose.
