The Works of Sir Walter Ralegh. to Which Are Prefixed the Lives of the Author by W. Oldys and T. Birch

"The Works Of Sir Walter Ralegh. To Which Are Prefixed The Lives Of The Author By W. Oldys And T. Birch" is a 17th?century miscellany assembled around Raleigh’s writings and life. It blends a practical military and political corpus with verse, moral exhortation, and extensive documentary material. The volume presents two major statecraft treatises, Maxims of State and The Cabinet-Council, which outline forms of government, the roles of councils, and prudent strategies for war, finance, governance, and diplomacy, anchored in Renaissance political authority. Interwoven are The Dutiful Advice, a father–son exhortation on repentance and piety, and a broad body of Elizabethan/Jacobean lyric poetry—love lyrics, religious meditations, and nature pieces enriched by classical allusions. The appendices compile Raleigh’s biography, correspondence, court papers, and contemporary reactions to his Guiana voyage, trial, execution, and legacy, including scaffold testimony and posthumous petitions. Across its parts, the work surveys early modern statecraft, empire, and letters, offering insight into Raleigh’s influence on politics, literature, and history.
