In dictionary form, this guide prescribes correct usage along with spelling, pronunciation, and definitions. Unfortunately, it often discusses confusions Americans never make (titillate and titivate), British forms Americans never use (gaol, loo, hallo, kerb, on-stream), and common British pronunciations (privacy, calendar, sheik), yet it is not a guide to British English. Too often it notes spelling (asphyxiate, asthma, eighth, cirrhosis, phlegm) more reliably found in a dictionary.
