World War I Before the Outcome: 16 Real Decisions, What Was Known at the Time, and What Happened Next

The outcome is known. The decisions were not.

When did British neutrality stop being a usable option? Could Germany force Britain out of the war before American power became a military fact? And why did the Allies accept an armistice in 1918 while their armies were still advancing?

World War I Before the Outcome reconstructs sixteen real decisions from the July Crisis of 1914 to the armistice of 1918 as they appeared before the results were known.

Thomas Norwick asks what the people inside each decision actually knew, what they believed, what they could control, and what alternatives were still usable. The cases range from Russian mobilization and the Dardanelles to Italian intervention, conscription, Romania, unrestricted submarine warfare, American armed neutrality, convoy, Brest-Litovsk, Allied command, and the final negotiations to stop the war.

This is not alternate history and not a condensed survey of the entire First World War. It is a concise decision history about how plans became orders, promises became commitments, evidence changed forecasts, and choices that still existed on paper became harder—or more costly—to use.
