This book is a scholarly account of every known aspect of the 2nd period of recorded Jewish history: the exodus from Egypt, the settlement of Canaan by the Hebrews, and the establishment of the Kingdom of Israel. This volume covers the history included in five books of the Old Testament: Judges, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 Kings. It includes consideration of the neighboring cultures of Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria, Crete, and Mycenae, whose influences are evident in the developing Israelite culture and nation. Per Benjamin Mazar, this study "is devoted to the most ancient period in the nation's annals, from the earliest times to the establishment of the Israelite Kingdom. The origins of the Hebrews, the formation and crystallization of the nation, its history, and the growth of its spiritual culture and social organization are discussed in detail against the backdrop of historico-cultural developments in the lands of the Bible. Under the editorship of Dr. Mazar, Professor of History of the Jewish People in the Biblical Period, and of the Archaeology of Palestine, at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, 10 scholars have prepared the 13 chapters of Judges.
