World Migration Report 2008, Managing Labour Mobility In The Evolving Global Economy

An in-depth report of contemporary world migration, this updated 2008 edition analyzes human mobility due to globalization and seeks to identify policy options with broad and coherent strategies that would better match demand for migrant workers with supply in safe, humane, and orderly ways. Part A of the report explores the nature and magnitude of the need for such strategies through the observation and analysis of a wide range of contemporary migratory patterns linked to economic purposes, while Part B discusses the contours of possible policy response. Questions directly addressed include: What organizing principles should be adopted? Should migration be considered entirely “natural”? and Would migration management be more effective if priority of attention were given to the maintenance of national sovereignty in migration or to the free play of market interests?
